The objectives of this lab are to introduce you to the fundamental principles of GIS. It is also intended to give you practical experience with a commonly used GIS software package (i.e., Esri’s ArcGIS). By the end of this lab, you will be able to:

  • Define GIS and understand attribute data
  • Perform basic data retrieval functions in GIS;
  • Search and import geospatial data from open and academic sources;
  • Perform a variety of queries using SQL in ArcMap;
  • Process spatial data (geoprocessing) for visualization purposes;
  • Produce cartographically sound maps
