Shingled Disk Drives
A new type of disk has come to market. It is called a “shingleddisk”, and has the following properties. First, tracks are groupedinto groups called “shingles”. Within each shingle, tracks arepacked very tightly, such that when you write to a block on trackK, you will likely overwrite (oops) the corresponding block ontrack K+1.
Thus, tracks within a shingle should be written in order, from 0to T-1 (assuming T tracks in each shingle); if you stick to writingtracks in order within a shingle, you won’t lose any data.
