In February 2015, as many as 80 million customers of thenation’s second‐largest health insurance company, Anthem Inc., hadtheir account information stolen. This compromise affectedcustomers in at least 14 different states where Anthem providedservices. The hackers gained access to Anthem’s computer system andgot information including names, birthdays, medical IDs, SocialSecurity numbers, street addresses, email addresses, and employmentinformation including income data. Both current and formercustomers were exposed during this breach. So, while this was anattack against a medical provider and it resulted in a massive databreach, regulatory requirements were not sufficient to help preventthis breach.
