In a dairy facility, fresh milk at a temperature of 38°C and a flow rate of 0.1 kg/s must be chilled to a temperature of 10°C, to minimise bacterial growth. The milk enters the thin-walled inner tube (D 50 mm) of a counterflow heat exchanger, while water at a temperature of 5°C flows through the outer annulus at a flow rate of 0.5 kg/s. Determine the required heat transfer rate [2 marks] and the exit temperature of the water [2 marks]. If the heat transfer coefficient on the water side is 2800 W/m2K, determine the overall heat transfer coefficient [8 marks] and estimate the length of the heat exchanger necessary to achieve adequate cooling of the milk [5 marks]. You may assume the following properties for milk: p 1030 kg/m3; cp 3860 J/kgK; k 0.23 W/mK, H 880 x 107 Ns/m2
