Why is American English not linguistically homogenous?

Since in the older times, Britishers ruled in many commonwealths countries so British English became more popular in many parts of the world. This can be one of the main reason that American English is not linguistically homogenous. Also, the American accent is quite complicated than the British accent and American English is basically spoken more only in the United States. While if we talk about U.K British English is more popular than American English although linguistically U.K is extremely diverse.
Similarly, other countries of the world also prefer British English
