Some scholars argue that “French liberty, fraternity and equality are

supposed to offer all members of society the same rights and privileges

and protection under universal principles of justice, but France’s diasporic population are still marginalized and excluded because of their ‘different’ origins.” Gerard Noiriel

identifies this process of exclusion of certain French nationals from

equal rights as a form of ‘tyranny of the national’, which is due to the
