Thepatient is an 89-year-old man with advanced COPD who was admittedto the hospital complaining of cough, shortness of breath, andfever. It was determined that he was suffering from COPD with acutebronchitis. He is supplemental oxygen dependent and also hascorpulmonale. He was treated with bronchodilators, antibiotics, anda tapering dose of steroids. The patient was on “do notresuscitate” (DNR) status. The patient was becoming progressivelyweaker with more respiratory distress. During this hospital stay,the family members decided to initiate comfort care measures afterspeaking with the physician about the patient’s prognosis.
